We left Jackson and the Tetons
this morning headed to Yellowstone... but not without one more moose. This one
was crossing Gros Ventre River at the junction.

First stop in Yellowstone was
at the Old Faithful area where we walked around taking pictures of the hot
pools and geysers before settling in for a show by Old Faithful
herself.

One thing we noticed rather
quickly was how different the weather could be in a day's time. It went from a
warm 72 degrees one day to a pelting of wintery mix several times today. The
wind was also brutal. Temps were generally in the 50's.
Heading north, Gibbon Falls was
flowing at maximum capacity. I have rarely seen the rivers at such levels and
fields looking like lakes.

We found mother owl and two her
little ones in their nest at Mammoth. Of course, the babies looked almost as
big as mama.

On the way to the northeast
side of the park we found Rod Prouty and others watching a carcass near the
self-guided tour in the Blacktail area where 5-minutes earlier there had been a
wolf -- the story of our lives.
Bighorn sheep were at the
Yellowstone Picnic Area near Roosevelt Junction.

Up the road in Little America
we found Bart and Monique. We spent a little time with them there at the badger
den and again later at Tower along with Maureen and Dick Ware.
Red dogs (baby bison) were
abundant in Little America and Lamar Valley. They were kicking up their heels
and chasing each other around. They were so much fun to watch! This one still
had its cord hanging on.

Heading back to West
Yellowstone for the night we saw a bear jam in Roosevelt just before Petrified
Tree. It was a black bear grazing in the meadow. Ranger John was there to keep
traffic moving and was very kind as always.

There were some elk but they
were not in abundance. This male was grazing right by the road not far from
Norris.

Below is a shot of the
Chocolate Pot. It is on the Giddon River bank near Gibbon Meadows picnic area
but is at an unmarked pullout.

West Yellowstone was our
destination after a long day, but there was still time for about 50 more
photos. There had to have been 25+ painted bison in town to be sold in August.
They were beautiful. Each one was done by different artists and really
displayed their talent. I will post all of them when I get home.

Until tomorrow, this is Bryan
and Sharon signing out. Not too bad for a slow day. |
