Yellowstone Lake

Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-altitude lake in North America. It sits at 7,733 feet above sea level. The average summer temperature of the water is just 45 degrees and it freezes 2 feet thick in the winter. The lake floor is geothermically active. Boiling water enters the lake through thermal springs. An ominouse bulge up to 100 feet high rises from the lake bed -- perhaps the forerunner of a future, large hydrothermal explosion.

The 1988 fire that swept through this area left a mark that is still very evident.

Below is Fishing Bridge. What a strange name for a bridge that you cannot fish from!

Pelicans swim in the waters near Fishing Bridge. This is at the mouth of the Yellowstone River.

Ducks and sea gulls also live in these cold waters.

Larger animals visit these banks including black bears, grizzly bears (pictured) and bison (pictured).
