Roosevelt is where the Grand Loop road meets up with the road to Lamar Valley and the northeast entrance. This is one of my favorite stretches particularly for wildlife viewing... but the scenery ain't bad either. Below is the petrified tree. It is fenced off to keep people from taking home souveniers. The petrified tree is a good place to spot black bears. The one below was seen sleeping. On another occasion we found another roaming around grazing. Sometimes you don't even have to look hard for bears in this area... they just might walk right out in front of you in the road. Elks Creek is just down the road within viewing distance. It is here that we saw a moose in 2007. This is a rare sight in Yellowstone (compared to Teton National Park). It pays to keep your eyes open (or to look for other people standing on the side of the road with cameras). From the road you can see a cinnamon-colored black bear. The second picture is a little closer view. It helps to have a zoom lens at this park. If you head toward Lamar you will immediately cross over the Yellowstone River. Just to the right is Yellowstone Picnic area. Here you will often find ewe and ram bighorn sheep.
