At the north entrance to Yellowstone is the little town of Gardiner. There are several hotels and restaurants available at prices much lower that you will find in the park.
The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is still very wild. In 2007, there were two attacks on humans by grizzly bears just outside of town.
The Roosevelt Arch has welcomed park visitors since the days when they came in by train and toured via horse and coach. The inscription on the entrance side reads, "For the benefit and enjoyment of the people."
The National Park entrance sign is just a couple hundred yards away.
You are likely to be greeted by pronghorn antelope or bighorn sheep as you drive up to Mammoth. Below is an antelope that was on the roadside.
