This is not a drive but an adventure. You will pass several mountain lakes along the way including Nymph, Twin, Grizzly and Beaver Lakes. As you drive by the many willow-lined streams, be on the lookout for moose. Bison herds abound. And so do the bison jams. Look for more coyotes. And elk. You will come to Roaring Mountain. Stop for a picnic at Sheepeater Cliffs where you will find unusual Basalt rock columns and marmots.
The roads can turn slippery rather suddenly at these elevations. One of our favorite stops was at Swan lake Flat. The scenery was gorgeous.
There are beavers here.
Black bears...
Grizzly bears... (sorry, they were far away)
Elk...
Sandhill Cranes...
Marmots... and more.
From the pullout at Swan Lake Flat you can climb Bunsen Peak (a popular hike).
Around the corner is Golden Gate and falls. This sight welcomes you to the Mammoth area.
