This is a very popular place to spot animals... including bison, wolves, coyotes, eagles, badgers, otters, and so many more species. People will line the roads with spotting scopes all day looking for wolves. While we have had a couple brief wolf sightings, many others have been rewarded for their patience. Below are some of the rewarding landscape vistas on which to feast your eyes. Enough of the land... you want animals, right? Well, this is bison heaven as you can see. Below is a coyote and if you look real hard you can find some pups in the sage brush in the second picture below. This is where you have to rely on people with high-powered spotting scopes, but if you try real hard you might be able to see the grizzly bear sow and cub on top on a boulder in the center of the next picture. You could easily miss this if it weren't for all the cars pulled over. Next is a golden eagle that found a meal on the ground. He has an onlooker as well. Slough Creek campground is in Lamar. There is a pack of wolves by the same name. We drove down a gravel road for a ways looking for wildlife, but with the exception of the deer below and some bison, we were mostly rewarded with beautiful views. Below is what is left of someone's dinner. This was found near the river. In 2007 we saw more Pronghorn Antelope than in the previous two years combined in Lamar.
Toward the northeast section of Lamar is Soda Butte, an ancient spring. The mountain peaks begin to rise a little higher here as well as you near Cooke City (but you are still many miles away). Trout Lake is a nice vertical hike. We did this with friends, Bart and Monique from Holland. We kept a close eye out for grizzly bears but were really hoping to see otters. No luck with either... just pretty views on that day. A little farther north is Baronette Peak. Mountain Goats can be seen on this mountain. They are not native to the park.
