There are two drives that I recommend you taking just south of Madison Junction. The first is Firehole Canyon Drive. The canyon walls are made of crumbling lava. The road twists one way along the Firehole River. The quiet river flows into a small canyon where the waters churn, tumble over Firehole Falls, then dump peacefully back into the Madison Valley. The next drive is on the opposite side of the road called Firehole Lake Drive. You will pass by a large lake of boiling, steaming water. And Great Fountain Geyser... I have yet to see it go off, although I understand it is a spectacular show. And White Dome Geyser... Who knows,... maybe you'll even see some local wildlife in the vicinity.
