Canyon

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is a sight to behold! The river has carved its way through layers of volcanic materials which give way to a beautifully colored steep walls. Lower Falls is one of the most popular destinations in the park and there are several points from which to view it.

The following is from Lookout Point, Inspiration Point, Red Rocks, and finally from Artists Point.

The canyon walls are rugged, ragged, and yet beautiful.

You can take a walk to the very brink of the Lower Falls. There is a series of switchback trails that drop hundred of feet from the parking area.

Below are the river rapids leading to the falls, the falls themselves, and the rainbow that is formed from the explosions of water below. The view is rewarding despite the rough hike back up to the car.

If you like steps, then perhaps you would enjoy a view of the falls from Uncle Tom's Trail (we have not done this yet, not do we expect to in the future).

As you walk down to the brink of the Lower Falls, you will get a glimpse of the shorter Upper Falls around the bend. You will loose sight of them once you arrive at your destination.

From the opposite side of the canyon you can see the Upper Falls, or you can take a short walk to the brink (much easier than the Lower Falls hike).

Although less impressive, a rainbow appears when looking down from the brink of Upper Falls as well.

You can find a number of animals in the area. There are always signs of buffalo... just look at the trees. Buffalo and elk both use trees to sharpen their horns and antlers.

You can also find bears, moose, and elk (the elk are everywhere!). You can even see trails on the side of the canyon where elk have been (I though this was from bighorn sheep until I actually saw the elk).

And how could I forget the kissing ravens? What a romatic place!
