A Snow Day AdventureOn Friday, January 8, 2010 Amos Welch and Bryan Nowak took advantage of a snow day and headed for the hills (or should I say mills) of northeast Georgia. Below is a picture of my house. Yes, the sky was blue and the snow was light but the roads were slick and icy. First stop was Healen Mill in Lula off of White Hall Road near I-985. You can see that the dirt road was very white. By now you have probably figured out that I was looking for some "different" shots. The next place we visited was Laudermilk Mill near Clarkesville on Hwy 197. We were shooting from the side of the road so there was not a lot of opportunity for creative shots. On Hwy 115 just west of Clarkesville is Pardue Mill. It is located to the south side of the highway on Pardue Mill Road. Again, this mill was on private property so we were left shooting from limited angles. Oh yeah, and we were shooting into the sun. The Jeep was pointed next to the far northeast corner of the state -- Rabun County -- where two more mills were located. The first is Barker's Creek Mill. There was a real nice old barn falling apart on our walk down to the mill. Our last stop before heading home was Sylvan Falls Mill down Wolffork Rd in Rabun Gap. This is still a working mill but also serves as a bed and breakfast. Again, the roads were a bit icy but Amos had his Jeep ready for it with his 4-wheel drive. Too bad Amos wasn't as suited for the cold weather as his vehicle. He was turning a little red with single-digit wind chills. As we were preparing to leave, cows began walking toward us heading for the mill stream and a salt lick. They really crowded together in that frigid cold stream. We did take one more excursion but it ended up being a wild goose chase. Thanks, Amos, for a fun day of photography, tasty trail mix and great company. |
